Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh

The Starry Night

'The Starry Night' by Vincent van Gogh, oil on canvas, 1889. Original can be viewed at the Museum of Modern Art, NY, NY.

Creative Commons Public Domain Dedication downloadable digital image courtesy of Pixabay. Post-impressionism. Finished in June of 1889.

The view is from the east-facing window of his asylum room at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, just before sunrise, with the addition of an idealized village.

It is widely regarded as among Van Gogh's finest works (and remains high in the list of one of my absolute favorites).

Worthful Public Masterworks Digital Art Gallery

Worthful art and historic pieces by the masters. This page showcases some of the great artworks of history. The images used, though fully credited, are either public domain, or licensed equivalently as public dedication freeware. This gives mankind the opportunity to be inspired through his/her online connected digital life, though I will emphasize that even though the works presented are accurate digitally scanned represenations, they cannot convey the detail, texture and 'feel' of a real masterwork when viewing in person, close-up and at various angles.

This page will be expanded into a full-fledged online web gallery as the website progresses and people show interest.  Because these works essentially belong to the public despite any ownership or Copyright claim, you can actually use them as art for your own website, and in fact you can use them in your own artworks, though the art world will cringe and shun you if you do not include proper credit for the contribution of the art used in your work.

It is for that very reason that we do engourage all to include the proper credit for a work, even though it is legal to do so because it is public domain/dedication.  By accrediting the original artist each time a work is displayed we reduce the risk of ostracizing a young artist before his career even starts, because we artists are quite picky about these things.

Enjoy!
