Web Fonts are commonly Open Source projects, but can have different licenses. Be sure to check each license for use requirements. They are often SIL OFL (Summer Institute of Linguistics Open Font License), GNU or Apache licensed, but can also have commercial licenses or simply be Public Domain (or "CC0" meaning "Creative Commons Public Domain Dedication"). Because Public Domain (& CC0) fonts are void of use restriction (and have their own category here at Worthful), we show mostly SIL OFL, GNU & Apache web fonts in this category.

About Web Fonts & Online Use Typefaces

Web fonts have freed the designer from the constraints of using the same font that everyone else uses.  It also used to be that no one would dare use a serif typeface for a website because they looked so poor on screen.

Since then, times have changed. We now have numerous fonts that are licensed for the web & online media so that they can be used freely across the internet, and many are even designed and optimized for screen resolutions across device platforms.  Plus, our screen resolutions have vastly improved so that we can experiment as designers.

Web fonts can be public domain fonts, which have no restriction on their use, but more often are distributed under a specific license, which are either the SIL Open Font License (OFL), the GNU license, or the old Apache license.  Free, freeware, shareware and commercial licenses can also specify that a font can be used online as a web font, though there can be restrictions to such use.

Most free web fonts are currently distributed as OFL web fonts because it is an open source platform with the least restriction, but a wide variety of free, freeware, donationware, shareware and commercial web fonts are emerging in the market today.  Be sure to read the license for any online restrictions with these other licenses, though.
